Endodontics, or Root Canal Therapy, is employed when the nerve supply to a tooth has been affected by damage or decay. The cause of many severe toothaches is often an involved dental nerve. In these cases root canal therapy may be needed to alleviate the discomfort and to eliminate any infection which can lead to more serious complications including tooth and bone loss.
The canals inside teeth carry both the nerves and the blood supply. Generally, a tooth will have one to three canals depending on its location. Root canal therapy involves cleaning each canal and shaping it in preparation for a special filling material. Once the canals are prepared they are filled with an inert material called gutta percha and then sealed. The root canal may be done over the course of a couple of visits.
The tooth is now ready for a restoration that will prevent any additional breakdown. Our office will recommend the best procedures to return the form and function of the effected tooth.
